During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day state visit to Washington, President Donald Trump broke protocol to greet Xi plane-side at Joint Base Andrews before launching into an itinerary filled with high-level pageantry, including a White House arrival ceremony with a B-2 stealth bomber flyover, a Marine One tour, and a visit to the National Archives to view the U.S. Constitution. The leaders held three hours of Oval Office bilateral meetings and hosted a state dinner attended by prominent tech executives, including Elon Musk, Tim Cook, and Sam Altman, while Xi also committed to sending a new pair of giant pandas to the Atlanta Zoo.
On the policy front, discussions resulted in a modest two-month extension of an expiring U.S.-China trade tariff truce and confirmed plans for future summits—with Trump attending APEC in Shenzhen and Xi attending the G20 at Trump’s Doral resort—but negotiations stalled on heavier issues. Specifically, the leaders clashed over artificial intelligence safety standards without forming regulatory frameworks, while Trump unsuccessfully pressed China to halt its Iranian oil purchases and Xi urged an end to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.
