President Donald Trump is escalating his trade fight with Canada, accusing the country of driving American companies out of business and calling Canada one of the most difficult and unreasonable countries to negotiate with.
The Trump administration is threatening new 50% tariffs on Canadian auto parts and steel after trade talks stalled. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says the administration is focused on protecting American workers, manufacturers, small businesses and farmers.
Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are pushing back against Trump, warning that the tariffs could damage Canada's auto and manufacturing sectors. Canada is also reportedly preparing possible retaliatory tariffs against the United States.
