Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is urging America’s service members, their spouses and eligible family members to participate in the upcoming election.
In a video address, Hegseth highlighted declining military voter participation and encouraged service members to use resources provided by the Federal Voting Assistance Program to register and request absentee ballots. FVAP reports that active-duty voter participation fell from 47% in 2020 to 42% in 2024, while the active-duty voter registration rate fell from 70% to 67%.
Service members stationed away from their voting residence can use the Federal Post Card Application to register and request an absentee ballot. The Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot is also available as a backup if an official ballot does not arrive in time.
Hegseth emphasized that the message is about encouraging eligible service members to vote, not telling them who to vote for.
